The ability to trust other people is absolutely necessary, not just for society to function, but for all of us to live a good, happy life. We can't live our lives isolated in our own paranoia. That would be awful. And so there seems to be this sort of impossible to eradicate, again, tension between trust and the fact that we are opening ourselves up to nefarious people,. unscrupulous people, con artists and other such characters.
