I feel like that can be tricky enough when you're just looking at the world today, but when you add in the long-term future, it can just really go bonkers, right? And this is one of the common critiques of long-termism, that it's all about maximizing overall expected value. I don't buy that argument for a number of reasons. If it were not the case that AI risk and virus and other things like climate change looked like such a potential big deal this century, I think I would just say, "We're not going to get much done here"
