I think all of us live to some degree or another on autopilot when we're not careful. My goal would be to live as consciously as possible so that I have more freedom in the world. That's a Marilyn Robinsonism. Watching the underlying motivations of characters is what fascinates us. You could just read descriptions of how people act. These sort of constellations of behaviors and traits and motivations.
