I was scared because their family is fluent in the Dine language and have a strong knowledge of ceremonial ways. Their grandmother told a few stories, then showed my partner sister how to make the dish only once. From there it was trial and error, she took charge and carefully moved through the motions. They showed no hesitation. There are no grades in these moments, only stories and sometimes another pair of hands to guide your way.
