Lances - The Most Effective Weapon in the Napoleonic Wars

There is a lot of debate over the effectiveness of lancers. They were originally conceived of as an anti cavalry weapon. Lances either shattered or got hopelessly stuck into the enemy at the first blow. The lance was also very heavy and awkward and difficult to use properly. Well trained, experienced lancer units achieved some incredible successes during the napoleonic wars.
