Augustine wrote the confessions to show that he wasn't just some lackey from Milan. He needed those in the region who had known him in his youth to understand that he had genuinely changed. Augustine's friend, Alipius, may have sought funds for a monastery or similar commune through connections with Polinus of Nola.
