Weber thought that the british political system was very good at producing leaders out of the machine. The kinds of politicians he had in mind were people like the great victorian prime minister, william gladstone. He worked his way up what his rival disraeli called the greasy pole. But having reached the top, he was able to supply politics with its vision.
