Ostrom was a political scientist by training and taught in political science and public administration, Viviana in sociology working on economic sociology. Both have pushed that I think over time the discipline has gotten a bit more open about what rationality means. We still have lots of fights about that right behavioral economics is often pointing out what's irrational rather than broadening the scope of what rationality might be.
