Franco is unhappy in northern Spain and longs to return to Africa. In 1917 he meets a slender dark-eyed girl at a local fair. The two begin a courtship but the affair is abruptly put on pause when Franco is sent away to take part in a mandatory marksmanship course that all army majors must attend. It's on this course that Franco meets Major Jose Astrai, 13 years his senior.
