There's a really wonderful paper that was published by none other than the great Matthew Walker. When I believe he was a graduate student, maybe he was a postdoc when he did this in Robert's thick gold's lab at Harvard. The title of the paper is sleep and time course of motor skill learning. This is a paper published in 2003, still an incredibly important paper. For individuals 65 or older, a combination of physical and mental training may actually allow them to gain and consolidate skills better than were they to do physical training alone.
