The Origins of Dutch Military Terms in the Middle Ages
When the region was divided in 15 79, a few years later in our story, the region in the north was almost entirely dutch speaking. The important region of flanders was south of that dividing line, so it ultimately became part of belgium. Now some people refer to those three regions as the benelux countries, a portmanteau combining first parts of belgian, netherlands and luxembourg. During this period, the maritime connection continued to lead to the borrowing of nautical terms from dutch.
