In countries with notionally democratic political processes or that had processes that were trying to be democratic and to degree had succeeded. People elected who were nationalist populist conservative culturally or in religious terms representing what we might refer to as the silent majority. These people then essentially hollow out the democratic and capitalist system from within by using their powers of appointment, he says.
