The Negative Externalities of Anonymous Publication

Anonymous publication is a net benefit to scholarship insofar as it provides a vehicle for advancing various points of view. There are negative externalities, but I don't think that they're all that serious if we think about what the fundamental aim of scholarship is. Jeff McMahon gave me something like 8,000 words of comments on a draft of my paper. That was super agatory.
