Aaron Carroll: Do you mind telling us how the YouTube ecosystem became what it is? He says there are about 2 million professional creators, meaning defining professional as making money on YouTube. They're getting paid about $15 billion a year from YouTube and that's a 55-45 split between YouTube and creator, he says. Carroll: When they transition towards actually measuring watch time instead of views, that watch time metric, where they're trying to maximize that, force them to think of a recommendation engine rather than a search engine so that they could surface content that they think that you will like even though you're not searching for it.
