Chase indicated that he understood the danger, possibly better than we did. He said that he'd experienced something the last time he entered those woods and he wasn't prepared to go down that path again. The ground here was wet, waterlogged. A damp marshy smell filled my nostrils as we pushed through the cool stillness. I couldn't hear anything except the sound of our feet in the grass and the muck.
