Most of the freedom songs were adapted from gospel, blues and folk music as tools for movement organizing. Music was a source of healing, unity and motivation. The primary organizers fthe southern civil rights movement did not meet in offices in atlanta or washington, d c, or new york. They gathered at night, usually in black churches in small towns and on rural back roads.
In the summer of 1964, about a thousand young Americans, black and white, came together in Mississippi to place themselves in the path of white supremacist power and violence. They issued a bold pro-democracy challenge to the nation and the Democratic Party.
