Most of the freedom songs were adapted from gospel, blues and folk music as tools for movement organizing. Music was a source of healing, unity and motivation. The primary organizers fthe southern civil rights movement did not meet in offices in atlanta or washington, d c, or new york. They gathered at night, usually in black churches in small towns and on rural back roads.
