How to Rebuild a Damaged Coral Reef

Coral reef biologists are a long way behind other systems as coral reef biologists, in that there's lots of parallels to systems on land. And so we looked for inspiration from some of these terrestrial systems. It turns out, for many years, people have been using loudspeakers to broadcast the sound of bird colonies and it worked. We started to think, well, if there's all these similarities between birdsong and fish song, why would it not work underwater? That was an experiment that came out of the tragedy of hearing the reef fall silent after it had degraded.
