Introduction
Ancient Indian writings were composed mostly by men and mostly for men. Women made up half the population, but from the point of view of these authors, they were not the better half. A classic statement of misogynism can be found in the Laws of Manu. The wife's role is to enable the husband to achieve his sacrificial purposes.
