What Is a Retrograde Planet Doing?

During a retrograde planet, the earth is going to go faster and pass say, you know, Mars or Jupiter or Saturn. And as it goes past it, even though they're still going forward, it seems like it's going backwards from our perspective. So actually going backwards, we are just passing it in space from here. It's kind of like an optical illusion.
