The Mismatch Between Technotical Capacity and Ourselves

Can you imagine machines developing consciousness? We don't have a very clear sense for what the sufficient, an necessary criteria for anything being conscious is. It's a big topic in philosophy of mind and so forth. Most of us think that some animals have degrees of more or less significant consciousness. But we don't think they can suffer yet.
