I Don't Have Any Friends to Lose. They're All Done
The real kind of freedom that's virtuous is the freedom in which we constantly constrain ourselves. A child that learns to play the piano really well, she is far more free as a pianist than she was before she'd ever taken her first lesson. I think most Americans when we're talking about freedom, unfortunately, we think, well, if I can smoke pot, nobody bothers me and I can have sex with whomever I want, then that I'm free. That's not the kind offreedom that we'retalking about.
