The Virtues and Good Qualities of Men

If you wish to know whether a man is truly wise, learned, generous, or noble, note whether his good qualities tend to humility, modesty, and submission. Others who have but a bit of learning would like to be honored and respected by the whole world as though everyone should learn from them and make them their masters. It is no longer an honor to be handsome when a man honors himself for it. If one wishes to be graceful in one's beauty, it should be disregarded. When learning is the disgrace for us when it puffs up our pride and degenerates into pedantry.
