What Happened in the 90s?
There was a big executive change in 1995 because Michael Fuchs, who was overseeing original program and really in charge of HBO's program and strategy throughout the 80s and the first half of the 90s. And when he left, he was replaced by Chris Albrecht, who really wanted to do series. They had set up HBO independent productions, which was basically a little mini studio within HBO that was creating TV series and then selling it to the broadcast networks. But they weren't appearing on HBO. The arrival of DVDs in the late 90s and the early 2000s gave HBO a huge second revenue stream for programming.
