Planets Beyond Our Solar System

James webb will study far off planets by analyzing the light of a star when one of these worlds passes in front of it. We analyze the light into a rainbow, a spectrum, and then we see how much of that was because light went through the planetary atmosphere on its way to the telescope. So now we can say, well, does this planet have an atmosphere? And if it does, what are the molecules in it? That's one of the coolest things we can try, and we didn't even know it was possible when we started designing the web telescope back in 95.
