It's not about shorting for the sake of being short, it's more about identifying where the opportunities are and how traders are positioned. The reason it happens is because waiting for the fat pitch, the trades don't come along very often. As markets become more volatile as the position gets bigger, you end up getting lumpier trades, lumpier P&L.
