The Middle Aged Man and the Younger Man

I think that each are hearing each other, but not listening to one another because the old man, I don't think wants to be consoled. He just wants to drink his sorrows away. And the younger man, the young waiter has no interest in consoling or getting to know why this old man is sitting there drinking alone. So there seems to be this dilemma between the three age groups of what each one wants and what is best for each one. Do any of those points of view seem more selfish than the other?
