The Importance of Freedom of Speech in Universities

When you have whole communities whose members are raised in ways that make it hard for them to imagine alternatives then we at least have things we want to take a second look at. We have questions about the right amount of freedom of speech within universities. And we have people who worry about conformism who say there's a culture of suppression of speech in university life. I do think that's a legitimate starting gate question even though as pluralist I routinely end up giving answers that are friendly to groups ability to manifest their internal rules. It could be the case that within our associational life within our pluralistic institutions there are internal rules that relevant account is having something to do with freedom.
