The Advantages of Manual Management
For purely memory, its primarily performance. You can write the api that looks like its returning strings and not have to deal with manually managing buffers working. Iut wen it safe to use a buffer, worrying about aliasing between two mutable structures is no longer necessary. And you can generally write in the very efficient progaming style that you can do in sac but still writing robust software.
