The Pew Research Center conducts polls periodically on people's political attitudes. About 30% of Americans identify as Republican 27%, and the plurality 42% identify as independent. If you ask those independents, do you lean left or right? You get almost a 50-50 split. 48% of Americans either identify as Republican or lean Republican, 44% the other direction.
