Ghost in Goblins of Makai Maru by Fujiwata
The original title for the game was actually Makai, which means Demon World. The most notorious feature is you have to beat the game twice to get the true ending. You play as Arthur, who is a steelclad knight and it is a side scrolling game. It came out a few months before Super Mario Brothers in Japan.
