The Two Great Door Guardians of Paradise
During the war with Japan I saw in a New York newspaper a most curious picture, it was one of the two great, fierce-looking door guardians at Nara. The idea was not to stop and worship those figures, but to walk between them. Then you would come to the Toedaiji temple, and there would be the great sun Buddha seated under the tree of immortal life with his hand saying, don't be afraid. And it suddenly occurred to me that it was we, not the Japanese, who worship a fierce god because our god is the one who stationed the cherubim at the garden gates so that we shouldn't pass.
