Rawls, Hayek, and Liberalism's Relationship with the Market

Political Theory 101

CHAPTER

Hayek on the Market

For Hayek, the market is the only fair way to decide how to distribute resources. He claims that justice just doesn't apply to the market. And if there is no justice in the market, then you can't challenge the market on grounds of distributive unfairness. Yet the market is a decision making mechanism which distributes resources. This makes him very different from someone like Noza. We talked a little bit about maybe doing a Rawls Noza episode. I ultimately decided to make it about Hayek.
