When these cells start to accumulate, they can that can essentially become something that accelerates the whole aging process. The immune system is getting less effective at clearing up those damaged cells. And so this does seem to be a very obvious candidate for a cause of aging. It's something that accumulates in our bodies as we get older and seems to drive a whole range of age-related diseases. But there's some really good exciting news at the end of this story. Scientists are going with drugs that can remove these senescent cells while leaving the rest of the cells of the body intact.
