In 1970, wages went flat for 50 years and productivity kept skyrocketing. The delta between those two is literally trillions of dollars in excess value that was captured all by shareholders. When you're totally optimized for shareholder value, you're much more inclined to buy shares back rather than invest in planned property and equipment or new employees.
