Lincoln wants the military to cut a few miles south across the waters to where the James River empties into the Chesapeake Bay. This would be challenging to Confederacy's Ironclad Merrimack. The next morning, the Union's own ironclad, the USS Monitor, steams out in the open. When they, along with Union fortifications, unleash their guns? They see that the odds aren't in their favor and wisely steam away.
