The Origin of Orphic Rituals in Ancient Greece
For a few hundred years, until maybe the last century, the understanding of orphic tradition has revolved around the idea that maybe it was some kind of proto christianity. The story of zagreus includes the idea of original sin and the atoning for it. It's only if you read it through a christian lens that you can even get the idea. And because of this, everything continued to revolve around that pre existing idea - making it stronger and stronger.
