In two thousand six a coalition of left parties were in power in spain. They negotiated a new statute of autonomy with the cadalan eneralitat. This was a significant step towards something more like a federal type system, where internal matters would be under catalan control. A shortly after this, left party lost power, and the partito popular and right coalition took power. The supreme judicial court in spain struck down the statute of autonomy. And this was a very disillusioning it. It convinceda many catalon separatists that they would never be able to achieve the sort of autonomy that they had been within spain.
