The Importance of Detail in the Story of Matthew Shepard

A few years before he was murdered, Matthew Shepard was apparently gang rape in Morocco. The only reason I can think that detail even matters is because some, you know, there's some talk about how he was very depressed and anxious. That has like mom and family members said a lot of his like mental health trauma to the extent he had it. It just made him seem more kidlike to me and more sort of vulnerable.
