In 19 61, jan saw this naturally occurring hyber rice. He immediately realized that there must be out there, possibly male sterile plants. And there are male sterile plants. This means that potentially, down the line, you could then develop hybrid rice seed. But rice is a much trick a crop to do this with, because it self fertilizes. So tritofied hybrid versions of a crop which fertilizes itself is very difficult to do. In 19 64, in the height of summer, he and a student did this the hard way. They went into rice fields.
