Social work literature indicates that why puts people on the defensive, even if we don't intend to. There's something about the word why that makes people feel as though they have to justify or defend. And what has felt challenging for me is, one of them keeps us stuck in the past, in blame and inaction. The other is a call to action to figure out what we can change. It's compassionate, it's supportive, and it'll produce a more well rounded pot of information.
