The hit-ry represented the only significant group of economically independent women in classical Athens. They were educated, which enabled them to take part in sophisticated conversations with the men. Many had a desire to become respectable and find a husband or stable companion. Typically, they often graduate to the status of Palaki, or mistress, for many upper-class Greek men.
