There were modern humans in Central Asia, but it looks like their population density was low enough that they didn't facilitate gene flow from east to west. So there's one group we call Ancient North Eurasians who are actually descended from a population that is deeply related to the people of Europe during the Pleistocene. They're deeply related to West Eurasians, but they're very, very, very early diverse.
