Windcatchers were common in Persian architecture starting thousands of years ago. They are essentially a windowed tower that's built to take advantage of the prevailing winds. A similar design was also part of ancient Egyptian architecture. But as areas have adopted air conditioning, these traditional elements have tended to disappear.
