Douglass constantly reinvented himself but stayed with a solid core. He envisioned the revolution the country now faced as an excellent instructor, especially about the nature of the enemy. Douglas met with Abraham Lincoln three different times. There was actually an invitation for a fourth time and Douglas had a speaking engagement. It wasn't long after that Lincoln was assassinated.
