Acute rheumatic fever is essentially an autoimmune condition triggered by a streptococcal infection. Rheumatic heart disease is the chronic long term condition that can set in afterwards. Some people considered to be at high risk, such as migrants from lower middle income countries and also Mary and Pacific Islanders living here in Australia.
