The child sees the dead mother as a rival of the new step-mother, and needs to feel loyalty to that shade. Then there's a rivalry we were talking about between competing for the man's patronage. But then I think there's another interesting rivalry which is the subalterns in the household. And that could include the wetness actually, though the wetness was usually in another household.
