The Theme in Variations Movement
ibilius takes a theme, which is the essence of simplicity and does a lot with it by doing not very much. He simply lets it speak. In one sense, this movement is a mess. But that's only if you subscribe to the idea that all theme in variations movements have to make perfect sense. There are some extraordinary colors though. Listen to the oboes and the accompaniment droning on as if they are part of the drone part to a folk song.
