How to Really Know Another Person

Hidden Brain

CHAPTER

Are Stereotypes a Form of Misattribution?

Stereotypes are one of the biggest sources of information we rely on when it comes to judging other people, especially if we don't know them personally. So this influences person perception and accuracy in particular because these expectations serve as a lens through which we perceive and attend to all the information around us. If we expect it to happen, we're more likely to attend to information that's consistent with those expectations. We forget the stuff that's not consistent and we completely write it off. You know, don't pay attention to it at all or forget it completely.
