Pausanias and the Spartans

Pausanias made many enemies amongst the Greeks by behaving in an arrogant and overbearing manner. The regimented training in Sparta apparently left them ill-prepared to operate humanely once they had escaped from their way of life at home. Most Greeks were appalled with his lack of morals, so much so that they brought charges against him for acting as a Persian sage-rap. Although he was acquitted on the heaviest charges of meatism, he was censored for his private acts of oppression.
