Retaining Your Wretched Necessities
St. Augustine tells of how he withdrew from toghast and went to Carthage so that he might lessen the grief he might suffer at the death of a friend who had died in toghast. He says: "You must not wait to unravel these wretched friendships. You must rend them asunder" If through the imperfection of your repentance any evil inclination happens to remain in you, seek out mental solitude for your soul,. using my earlier advice and withdraw into it as often as you can. Read pious books more than usual, go to confession, and receive communion more frequently than is your custom.
